Cluster Flies are returning!

Unfortunately for many rural house dwellers the time of year has come to face the reoccurring demons that hide in the walls, cracks and voids wanting to use our homes as their winter resorts. The 'cluster fly' has arrived.

Cluster fly belong to the family 'Calliphoridae' these are associated with blowfly or blue bottle, the difference is they are not known as a health hazard and are in fact parasites of earthworms as opposed to association with dead and decaying animals or egg laying in human food stuffs as their counter parts the blue/green bottle fly would be best known for.

Cluster fly larvae will infest earthworms and then pupate and emerge as adults. This happens at the end of the summer leading into the colder weather. Often vast amounts of flies can be seen on South, South West facing walls in late September basking in the last warmth’s of summer.

Cluster flies will hibernate in lofts and voids over winter and often can be seen drowsy and dying around up stair window voids. Typically they are found in houses in rural locations or buildings that rise higher across landscapes.

 Cluster Fly     Cluster Fly 1

Control is difficult as they can venture into any crack and crevice, the flies will hibernate in their thousands and when leaving in April and May will leave a pheromone that will attract others the following year to return.

Treatment can be carried out by our skilled technicians and involves insecticidal chemicals being placed in lofts, voids and around window frames.

Rodents Returning

Now that the colder weather is creeping upon us many of us may be finding unwanted visitors taking up residence within our properties.

Our technicians recently came across a small nest which included some young mice huddled together. A female can have around 5-6 litters a year with up to 5-8 young per litter.

This time of year Mice and Rats are coming off the fields now that the harvest is complete and will be looking for suitable areas to nest, normally within warm spots such as old barns, garages and roof spaces.

Severe Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs are normally very difficult to identify and come across as they tend to hide away, coming out at night whilst we are sleeping to feed, however our Technician Dan had no problems identifying them within a property he recently treated.

Major Bed Bugs

As you can see the signs of activity are unmissable and the live bedbugs can be seen scurrying around the mattress and bed frame.

Needle Sweep

At Millennium Pest Control we often undertake regular cleaning of areas that are unfortunately littered with used Needles.

Removal of sharp objects such as syringes and needles needs to be done as safely as possible due to the high risk they pose with regards to infectious diseases. They are often found within public areas such as toilets, in derelict houses and squats, usually inhabited by illegal drug users.

These photos show a recent 'nest' which is the common name for users that frequent hidden and enclosed locations amongst the general public, they require being dealt with and sanitised immediately to reduce risks to health. Often we will also find human waste, blood and vomit within the same areas.

We are all at risk to disease and these services should most definitely be left to the professionals.

Mealworm

Whilst attending a routine inspection at a contracted customers farm our technician Steve came across this large infestation of mealworm within the roof space of the buildings.

mealworm

Mealworms prefer warm, dark and damp locations and will feast upon fresh or decaying matter, hence the farm building being the perfect location for them.

Mealworm1

The mealworms are larvae of the Darkling beetle and live to eat and grow until they have enough energy stored to begin the transformation into pupae and then into the beetle.

Carpet Moth Eradication

Our technician Steve attended an office building recently to eradicate an infestation of Carpet Moths.

The video shows the residual insecticide spray being applied and immediately you can see the activity of the Carpet Moths increase as they become agitated by the flushing agent within the chemical.

A 4 hour period after treatment is required to allow time for the chemical to dry before access to the premises can be allowed.

These pests can rapidly multiply in numbers and can cause huge financial damage to properties if left untreated.

Spring Cleaning

We have been called out to several different sites recently to assist with the removal of bird waste and disinfection of the area afterwards, some of these sites have included local churches.

Church Cleaning

Church bell towers are common places for pigeons and other birds to nest resulting in substantial damage and mess to the inside, including the bells themselves.

 Church Cleaning 4

Here at Millennium we specialise in the safe removal of waste and can ensure that all risk of infection is removed. Bird faeces can pose a high risk of infection to humans including but not limited to Histoplasmosis  and Psittacosis.

 Church Cleaning 1

Church Cleaning 3

Nesting birds also carry the risk of infesting the habitat with Bird Mite, parasites which feed off living organisms. An infestation of Bird Mite can cause irritation to human skin and infestations can rapidly multiply.

 Church Cleaning 2

After treatment we would then recommend our skilled technicians complete various forms of bird proofing to ensure that the situation does not occurr again.

We attended to a local Funeral Home to assist with some proofing work to stop the Mice from re-entering the premises.

This included fitting a brush strip to the bottom of a door, the Mice where able to come and go easily from underneath, they only need a gap as small as 3mm in diameter to be able to squeeze through and as you can see from the pictures below this had quite a substantial gap.

Along with using our bait stations placed around the premises we have now enabled our customer to eradicate the problem and become pest free.

Good Night, Sleep tight, Don't let the Bed Bugs bite!

Did you know a bed bug can survive without feeding for almost a whole year. They thrive off human and animal blood and are primarily nocturnal pests, hiding away in cracks and crevices of beds, mattresses and other furniture once they have fed. Typical signs of infestations include bites to the back, stomach and sides. Small dark brown spotting on bedding and mattresses and in some heavy infestations the bugs themselves can be seen.

If left untreated the infestation can quickly multiply and can take longer to eradicate.

Here at Millennium Pest Control we can thoroughly treat the affected areas, spraying the insecticidal chemical around the bed frames, wardrobe crevices and bedside tables, we then require to complete a second treatment two weeks later to enable the treatment to have full effect.

Carpet Moth Activity

Have you noticed patches of your carpets looking worn and threadbare recently?

A typical indication of a Carpet Moth infestation can be seen in the pictures below, these patches are found in particular around and beneath heavy furniture that hasn't been moved for some time where the pests will attack the fibres of the carpet.

Carpet Moth activity

If not treated the Carpet Moths can destroy the whole carpet, resulting in a costly and devastating outcome.

The Larvae can also cause some considerable damage to the carpets therefore treatment can sometimes take 6-8 weeks to work through the life cycles of the pests.

We can help to eradicate these pests before they create any further damage with a simple chemical treatment to the property.

Treatment of Cluster Flies within loft space

Cluster Flies are predominately in lofts and wall cavaties around this time of year as the weather gets colder.

You will often see them in late September through to early October, climbing the walls facing the South and South East of properties where the winter sun sits longest. As the weather cools the flies enter properties over the winter.

As we have had a mild winter to date the calls have only now started to pick up and treatments have begun.

Here we can see dead flies in a loft that have been accumulating over recent years, the customer has now started to notice the infestation rise again.

The activity arises each year and is controlled via a turbair machine. The knock-down insecticide is channelled through a high pressure unit forming a mist of insecticide that excites and kills the flies flushing them out from cracks and harbourage points.

Once the chemical is released large numbers of flies appear around lights and tumble down onto the loft floor.

If requested after 24 hours we can arrange a return visit to hoover and clear all the dead insects. It is important to remember that water tanks must be checked and sealed before treatment as we have done on this video to ensure no cross-contamination.

Safe Removal of Wasp Nests

In the height of summer a wasp nest can contain in excess of 20,000 active wasps. Each wasp will aggressively defend the nest and can deliver multiple stings. When a wasp stings it releases a pheromone which encourages other wasps to attack the same target making dealing with a wasp nest especially hazardous and particularly dangerous when treating in a confined or restricted space. It is important to use the right safety equipment and applying an effective treatment to kill the nest.

We have taken two videos of recent treatments of nests made by the two most common types of UK social wasps. The first is to a wasp nest of German or European Wasps which often nest outdoors or underground. The nest is within a log in a hedge line near to outbuildings and the wasps were patrolling a wide area making access difficult. The second nest of Common Wasps were extremely active, gaining access to a house under roof tiles above a guttering. Common wasps are slightly smaller than the European wasp and prefer to nest indoors within sheds, roof spaces or wall cavities, often making these nests more difficult to treat. We use Ficam-D Bendiocarb Insecticide powder to treat the access to each nest which is blown under pressure deep into the nest using a dusting applicator with long reach nozzle. Full safety equipment is worn to allow close access to both nests without getting seriously stung.

Problems with Garden Wasps

In early summer wasps mainly hunt other insects whilst working hard to expand the nest and they are commonly seen chewing untreated wood from fences, sheds and summer houses leaving tell tale strips in the wood. Treating the wood with a stain or preservative will stop this.

If you have a wasps nest, it can grow at an alarming rate and treatment can be troublesome, particularly in a restricted space, with larger nests containing thousands of wasps which quickly swarm and will sting to protect the nest. Nest are commonly found in wall cavities, roof and loft spaces, outbuilding, compost heaps or underground. If you think you have a nest observe from a safe distance to check where the wasps are gaining access - in the summer wasps will constantly be entering or leaving the nest as their numbers rapidly multiply.

We can attend same day to safely destroy and remove your nest using full protective clothing and long reach chemical applicators. Call free on 0800 0854460 or book online.

As summer continues and fruit ripens wasps switch their attention to foods high in sugar and are much more agressive becoming a pest in the garden. As well as treating nests we can also sell and supply a professional funnel trap and attractant to lure in and kill nearby wasps - call for more information 0800 0854460.

Flea Treatments

The mild winter has set the UK up for another flea epidemic this summer.  Treatment callouts to treat fleas in Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge has been rising over recent years and the current hot weather generates great conditions for flea larvae to hatch out.

Fleas can remain dormant for long periods of time at their pupae stage and are awakened by warmth combined with movement, or even increased levels of carbon dioxide as we breathe out.

Cat and dog fleas can make your pets life miserable - each flea inflicting up to 400 bites per day. Animal fleas do not like to live on humans, but they cannot determine you're not the best host until they bite you! Human fleas are no longer common in the UK, but they can successfully feed on pigs so rural farming areas can still be effected.

We have extensive experience of treating flea infestations and our flea treatment plan combines residual insecticide to kill fleas and stop future breeding with pre-treatment preparation to ensure the best results.

Wasp Nest Treatment

Targetted Wasp Nest RemovalWith the week of colder weather over half term, the number of calls to treat wasp nests dropped away slightly, but with the reemergence of the sun this week it has again been really busy. The very warm weather has seen a big increase in wasp activity and wasps can be seen stripping untreated wood to aid in nest building and foraging for food to sustain the rapidly growing nest.

At the height of the season wasps nests can contain up to 25,000 individual wasps and in these circumstances a nest in our homes or outbuildings can be a dangerous proposition.

We guarantee to effectively treat your wasp nests with rapid response teams in Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge with appointments available to book for the next working day. Call us freephone on 0800 085 4460 or click here to book a wasp nest treatment online.

Bee Control Norfolk & Suffolk

Honey BeeApril to July is the main season for bee swarms to be spotted across Norfolk and Suffolk.

The last couple of years have seen honey bee swarms make the news headlines with swarms effecting football matches, shopping centres and London streets.

A bee swarm is a natural process of expansion with bees leaving an established nests or hive to set up a new home elsewhere. A swarm of honey bees can vary in size from a couple of  thousand up to a mass twenty or thirty thousand strong. It can be a frightning sight, but in most cases the bees are not aggressive and if left alone will move on.

Honey bee swarms can be relocated and useful information can be found on the British Beekeepers Association website.

It can become more complicated if bees swarm close to your home or try and take up residence, and if relocation is not possible then bee control treatment may be the only option.

Bees are not a protected species - any type of UK Bee can be treated and we have extensive experience of treating Bees nests and swarms across Norfolk and Suffolk where other forms of control are not possible.

Found throughtout the UK, but most commonly in rural locations, cluster flies live and breed in fields during the summer months only becoming a household pest in the autumn and winter when they move indoors to hibernate, most often in roof spaces or wall voids. They congregate in large numbers and group together for warmth giving rise to their name.

In the spring the cluster breaks up giving rise to alarmingly large swarms of flies and on warmer winter days, cluster flies may also try to move towards the light being found in the home near windows.

Rat Damage in a Farm Seed MillThe farm kept pigs and had a large seed mill and the rats were both eating and contaminating the grain and causing damage to the buildings and electrical cables.

6 visits were undertaken over a 6 week period setting and monitoring secure rat poison bait stations and the rats have now been completely eradicated.

To prevent any future infestations a proactive pest control support contract is now in place to monitor and immediately treat any pest activity on the farm.

Wasps and Hornets

Following a warm summer which saw a much larger number of callouts for wasps we are heading into the autumn months which sees the end of the wasp season.  Wasp and hornet nests have been growing to larger than average size this year given the perfect breeding conditions in June and July.  Wasps now become very aggressive at this time of year as they hunt for especially sugary and sweet foods, such as ripe berries and summer fruits.

Carpet Moth

Common Clothes Moths attack natural fibres. The adults rarely fly to lights as you would normally associate with moth species. Any flying clothes moth is usually male as females tend to just hop around on the floor in dark and uninterrupted locations in search of breeding sites. The period of egg, larvae, pupa and adult emerging can take about six weeks in favourable conditions.

Bed Bug Treatments

Bed Bugs feed on blood and are most often found around the mattress or close to the bed. Commonly mistaken for mosquito bites, bed bug bites can often be found in lines on the host and can cause a painful and itchy reaction.

Bed Bugs on the base of a bed Bed Bugs Close Up Evidence of bed bugs

The short bed bug treatment video clip and pictures above were filmed by our pest control technician, Stephen Roberts, on a recent bed bug treatment carried out in a house in Cambridgeshire.

The first bed bug treatment has now been completed with a follow up appointment scheduled.

The bed bugs that are seen in the video have just been treated with insecticide and at 0.29 seconds you can see the first bed bug die. The chemicals flushing agent  irritates the bed bug, causing them to become active and come in contact with the chemical killing them.

Emergency Wasp Call Out

Millennium Pest Control received an emergency call today from a distraught lady who had received multiple wasp stings on her hands and head.

Entrance to a wasp nest through a bedroom wall.Having noticed a stain on her bedroom wall she had poked it putting her hand through the weakened plaster board into the middle of a wasp nest.

Our pest control technician, Stephen Roberts treated the main wasp nest and exterior entrance together with creating a temporary barrier to stop the wasps coming into the bedroom while the nest was being destroyed.

While on site he advised the lady visit the doctors visit to get checked as the stings were causing swelling and drowsiness and recommended immediately taking antihistamine to reduce any allergic reaction.

Brown Tail Moths

Last summer an infestation of Brown Tail Moths was reported at this industrial estate in Ipswich.

In large numbers Brown Tail Moths can cause extensive damage to the foilage of nearby trees and bushes and can cause an irritant reaction due the spiked barbed hair on their body that will penetrate the skin.

The outbreak was tracked back to several bushes growing on the site and a chemical free winter treatment plan put in place to cut the vegetation back to around a foot in height with the removed vegetation sent for incineration.

The area has been monitored since and there have been no reported Brown Tail Moths in this area.

Masonry Bees

Millennium Pest Control was asked to investigate a bee infestation or a possible wasp nest in a chimney in Norfolk. On arrival our technician went up the scaffolding and the roof to the chimney where he found several holes in the mortar in the chimney which were caused by masonry bees.

Masonry Bees nest individually. They bore holes into the masonry building constructions and can cause weaknesses in the structures if left over time. In many cases multiple numbers of Masonry Bees will nest in wall cavities each with their individual nesting holes. It is essential that treatment is carried out to badly infested sites.

All the holes have been treated therefore allowing the builders to re-point the chimney.

Excellent Control

The cold, wet and windy weather has brought many unwanted guests into our homes. Rats, mice and squirrels are amongst the most common.

We were recently called to a small rural property where the elderly residents had been experiencing scratching in the roof. They were unsure what it may be.

Our trained professional technician attended site and within five minutes had located the access point and the pest causing the issues. A loose tile and over hanging tree branches were aiding squirrels into the property and required urgent attention.

On discussion with the owners we decided to use fen traps to remove the squirrels, this is the quickest and most effective way of control, poisons can be used in these instances but you are then at risk of secondary poisoning of non-target species and having issues of blue bottle flies and odours from decaying bodies if they can not be located on subsequent visits.

The results speak for themselves and after we had taken back the tree branch and replaced the roof tile, job done and another happy customer!

Great Boost for Millennium

Another New Year and we are excited to announce that Millennium Pest Control has secured the contract for pest control services with a large local high street food chain. This is a great addition to our contract base and helps continue our growth around Norfolk and Suffolk.

The negotiations began last year and the tendering process included some very well known names in our industry. Millennium Pest Control is a relatively small company compared with our national competitors but thanks to the hard work and dedication of our management team our business relationship can now begin with the food chain.

Securing this contract has shown just how far the business has come over the last fifteen years. The company was started by two pest control technicians in a small conservatory, with long, long hours of work and many ups and downs, now boasts a fully operationally office unit with accompanying stores and warehouse.

We can assure all customers that our growth will only encourage the company to better ourselves and we are always looking at ways to improve our services to the domestic and commercial sectors.

Pigeon Clearance

Millennium Pest Control not only carry out removals of rodent and insect infestations they are also heavily involved in the cleaning and sanitising of pigeon faeces.

It is not well known to the average English citizen that bird droppings can be extremely dangerous to building structures and human health.

The droppings are acidic and eat away at building fabrics making them brittle and unstable. The excrement carries dangerous pathogens which cause the disease known as psittacosis, we have in the past also had to remove build up of droppings through e.coli out breaks in restaurants that have left the birds to breed and decimate in rear yards and gardens.

Pigeon Clearance - Before Pigeon Clearance - After

These before and after shots are a perfect example of a days cleaning program that was carried out recently at a well known High Street Bank. The droppings are classed as hazardous waste and taken to a specialist for disposal.

This area has been sanitised and disinfected to ensure removal of dangerous pathogens and make the working environment as safe as possible.

The outstanding danger above is the air-con unit which can unwittingly place the particles of dust into the buildings and into contact with the staff inside.

Where are the Wasps?

Millennium Pest Control has been treating wasps nests for the last 15 years and we have not experienced a wasp season like it before, we are used to hearing the terms, "I have a wasp nest in Norwich", "Please help I have wasps in my gutters in Ipswich" or " I have wasps in my shed in Cambridge" but instead all we are hearing from our technicians is the same accross the country, "Wasps in Newcastle are non-existent" or "The wasp season in Slough and Reading hasn't happened yet" these are all phrases in the wasp season we don't want to hear.

The wasp nests haven't happened so far based on a few factors, we had a warm start to the year in March which encouraged the queen wasps to emerge early from their hibernation, then unfortunatley for us the weather dipped and colder wetter conditions killed the Queen wasps and her drones. Emergency call outs for wasp control and removal in Birmingham over the last week has slightly increased which is a good sign for our company so hopefully the rest of the Country will soon follow suit.

Garden Ants Make an Appearance

As the warmer climate is now on the way we start to prepare ourselves for the problems about to arise, one problem becoming more common is the Garden Ant. Garden Ants usually start appearing in the early spring months and they are everywhere, they will appear in both homes and buildings usually in search of foods and materials to help build their colonies. Ants are attracted to any foods however they do seem to have a sweet tooth and will instantly flock to sugary items which have been left on surfaces so it is important not to leave anything lying around, ants will also be a pain for keen gardeners as they will eat ripe fruits, such as strawberries, which can be found in most allotments and gardens.

Bed Bugs on the Rise in January

January is a time for fresh starts and what better time to eradicate any pests you may have in your home which you may have been putting off. These cold months bring about all the general household pests and one of the problems homeowners are finding this month is the common Bed Bug.

Bed Bugs have the amazing ability to survive in all temperatures usually by hibernating this is why the problem can appear all year round. Bed Bugs are very small creatures and therefore this gives them the ability to hide in the best places and remain unseen for long periods of time. Bed Bugs can easily enter the home in a variation of ways, from moving around on second hand furniture (which is becoming a more popular way of purchasing expensive household items). Sometimes household pets can bring these bugs into the home or if you are unlucky enough they can also be picked up from yourself without your knowledge.

If you can confirm that Bed Bugs are in fact your problem then it is important that you act swiftly as these pests can increase in numbers quite rapidly. For further information or an informal chat then please contact us.

Rodents at Christmas

December may be the month where Christmas is the hot topic of conversation, however it is important to keep in mind that pests will still be on the prowl even during this month, rats and mice are no exception to this.

December usually sees a drop in temperature across the UK and because of this there is a risk that rats and mice will venture indoors in an attempt to find shelter, warmth and food. The most likely place they will find this is within buildings, whether it be residential or commercial, and once they have found adequate shelter they can be an issue to remove. Because of the health risks associated with mice and rats and the fear of the damage they can cause it is important to eradicate this problem as soon as possible.

Winter problem of Cluster Flies

Cluster Flies are a common problem for almost all homes and businesses during the winter months, in the last month alone we have carried out over 400 Cluster Fly treatments throughout the UK, the reason for this being the exceptionally mild weather conditions and these infestations could continue until the first frost sets in.

Cluster Fly populations are known to increase in numbers dependent upon the climate, if the summer months are warmer and longer then there is a great risk that these flies have more time to increase their numbers (and our problems) before the coldness of winter sets in. Once the weather starts to turn the flies will make their way into the building to the warmth and safety of our lofts. It is important to stop these flies in their tracks before they become a reoccurring problem each year.

Pest Problems in September

PEST PROBLEMS FOR SEPTEMBER 2011

Cluster Flies are the main problem in the month of September around the country. Enquires from domestic premises this month has been on the increase and this is partly down to the weather, mainly the “Indian Summer” which has descended upon us. Cluster Flies would usually appear around late fall or early winter and again on sunny days, hence the reason why they have been on the increase. Cluster flies can be found hibernating within your loft space and usually appear in the home buzzing sluggishly around windows or in rooms which are not regularly used, they will also appear in small groups.

For further information please visit our Flies section within our website or call us on 0800 0854460.

Seasonal Pests Problems

The problem found in the month of August is Wasps and Ladybirds.

This month alone has seen a large increase across all areas of reported problems with wasps and on a typical day our Pest Controllers can treat an average of seven or eight wasp nests. The main task is to locate their nest as nests can hold up to 20,000 wasps. Nest construction starts in June and will usually reach its maximum in size in September. The Queen mates in the autumn and leaves the nest to hibernate, the rest of the nest dies out and is never used again. Wasps have not yet developed their methods of storing foods over the winter and this is why their colonies only last for one season in high temperature regions. Our company has seen a large rise in Wasp problems across the country in this year alone.

The other species which we have seen a large increase in this season is Ladybirds. Experts believe the main cause of this to be a combination of a warm summer which brought a plentiful supply of aphids, their main food source, and the spread of a foreign variety. The Harlequin Ladybird, which is larger, spottier and more orange than native ladybirds and is usually found in clusters, ladybirds can cause a nuisance by emitting a smelly yellow chemical which stains most surfaces. Yet because these insects are not classified as pests there is no official guidance for how to tackle an infestation and no pestacide with which to kill them, leaving property owners struggling to fight back.
