Wasp Season

Wasp Season

Wasp 1

We are beginning to see the first signs of life from queen wasps coming out of their hibernation stage and they are starting to build the bases of a nest. Wasps themselves are not ususally a problem until June when the nests really take shape and there are more drone wasps (males/workers) appearing. If you attempt to squash one be very careful as the venom they have contains a pheromone that causes other wssps near by to be aggressive. Although wasps do not technically swarm, there may be large volumes of them that will defend the nest. In these pictures you are seeing the 'queen wasps' coming out of hibernation and starting their colony for the summer.

Wasp 2

Wasps make there nests out of, what is essentially, a paper material. They chew up strips of bark and spit it up again into a rough paper material. Millennium Pest Control Ltd offer services to treat wasp nests and we can remove old, inactive nests as well. When they are treated with an insecticide they will take up to 72 hours to die off completely. When a treatment does take place it is essential that you are; clear from the area for 4 hours, keep any pets out of the way,and notify your neighbours as they will become aggressive once they have been treated.

The pheromone they leave behind may attract nests and queens in years to come but they will never use the same nest.
