Hornets appear very similar to common wasps, but are larger and coloured more brown and yellow. Hornets will build papery nests often found in hollow trees, although hornet nests have been discovered in wall cavities and facias. The hornet's life cycle is very similar to that of the common wasp as they hibernate during the winter, and emerge in the later spring to begin building a nest. Later in the summer males and fertile females hatch and they mate and the females become next year’s queens. The males, old queen and workers die in the autumn. Hornets will only sting humans if provoked or attacked
